ON COURSE MARSHALLING AT SSGS EVENTS
Most of you will be aware that during the past few tournaments we have had a marshall [mainly Ian McKerron] on the course during play. The initiative for marshalling the course derived from some concerns among members about pace of play in one or two recent events.
The committee wants to make it clear to competitors that the role of the marshall is not to ‘spy’, single out or, indeed, sanction particular players that may have fallen behind the group in front, but primarily to monitor overall pace of play throughout the whole field in order to maintain flow.
So far, the mere presence of a marshall in a buggy has been sufficient to remind groups that have fallen behind to slightly quicken their pace without need for warnings or players being ‘put on the clock’.
We believe that the marshalling so far has delivered positive results and we are minded to continue with this initiative when resources and manpower allow (which will not always be the case).
These days, complaints about slow play are common in virtually all golfing environments and arenas. While it is sensible to try to address this problem wherever it might arise, there is a danger of becoming overly fixated on the issue when, in reality, around four hours for a three-ball in tournament conditions is not unreasonable.
To emphasise again, the course marshall is not there to threaten slow groups with sanctions. The marshall’s job is to merely make players aware that they may be losing too much ground to the group in front or are delaying groups coming behind them.
Of course, the presence of the marshall at any particular part of the course does not necessarily mean he is concerned about a group’s pace of play. He may just be admiring the golf before moving on!
We hope that members will support this move and trust they show the marshall due courtesy and respect for a job well worth doing.

Super Seniors Spring Meeting - Tulliallan G C - 30th April/1st May
LINDSAY GORDON TAKES THE HONOURS AT TULLIALLAN
Turnhouse veteran Lindsay Gordon turned in two superb rounds to triumph in the first Super Seniors tournament of the 2025 season at Tulliallan.
The current Super Seniors Matchplay Champion (nett) shot two successive scores of 72 gross to secure victory by one shot over Graham Bell (Downfield) in the Spring Meeting.
Michael Mercier (New Club, St Andrews) was third with rounds of 75 and 71, one shot behind the runner-up.
In the handicap section, Murray Ferguson (Royal Burgess Golfing Society) won by a single shot with nett rounds of 72 and 65. Runner-up Robin Cockburn (Gullane) recorded rounds of nett 71 and 67. Lindsay Gordon was third (69,69).
The event attracted a record entry of nearly 90 competitors and there was universal praise for the excellent condition of the course and first-class hospitality of the club.
The society is grateful to Tulliallan Golf Club for hosting the event.
The next Super Seniors tournament is at West Linton on June 2 and 3 and, again, promises a very healthy entry.

Spring Meeting - Moray G C 8/9th May
Royal Aberdeen’s Mark Halliday made a dream start to his Scottish Seniors career when he secured victory in the first flagship tournament of the year at Lossiemouth.
The +2 player followed a one under par 70 in the opening round at Moray Old with an impressive even par 71 to win the Spring Meeting gold medal by one stroke from playing partner and former Scotland internationalist Kenny Gallacher (East Kilbride GC).
Glasgow Golf Club’s Colin Peddie finished
third, one shot behind Gallacher.
Halliday, Gallacher, Peddie and Balmore’s Niall Lamond shared the lead after the first round, with four-times Order of Merit winner Ronnie Clark (Erskine) chasing hard, just one shot adrift on even par.
In the end it came down to the wire as Halliday and Gallacher battled it out over a course bathed in sunshine but with a testing, variable wind.
In the handicap section, victory went to Stephen Mitchell (Drumoig) with nett rounds of 69 and 67. Runner-up was Ken Milligan (Kingsfield) one shot behind, with Laurie Chancellor (Inverness) third, three shots off the lead.
The 36-hole tournament was played in beautiful weather over both days. The course was in first-class condition. Some tricky pin positions, coupled with the swirling wind, made it an excellent but stern test for the 130-strong field.
Our gratitude goes to all at Moray Golf Club for hosting the tournament, their hospitality and excellent presentation of a truly great golf course.

Presidents Cup- Montrose Golf Links - 22/23rd May (Closing date for entries 12:00 noon 24th April)
LINDSAY PIPS PEDDIE TO TAKE HOME PRESIDENT’S CUP FOR SECOND TIME
In a tense and enthralling finish, former Scotland internationalist Maurice Lindsay ran out winner of the 2025 President’s Cup at a sun-drenched but blustery Montrose Links. The Grange & Broughty Golf Club stalwart shot a second round, three under par 68, seven shots better than his opening 75, to pip playing partner Colin Peddie by a single stroke.
Lindsay got to five under par after 16 holes in the closing round but bogeyed the 17th and 18th for a one over par total of 143. Meanwhile, Glasgow Golf Club’s Peddie, who shot a one over par 72 in the opening round, birdied the 17th to give himself a fighting chance of victory.
But he just failed to convert a 20-foot putt for birdie on the last to win and then agonisingly missed the tap-in that would have tied him with Lindsay.
It was Lindsay’s second success in the tournament, having secured the President’s Cup at Ladybank in 2021.
Another former winner, Ian Brotherston, had led the 132-strong field by two shots after a magnificent first round 70 played in testing conditions due to the fiery, sun-bleached fairways and tricky pin positions.
But the Dumfries & County veteran, who won the first President’s Cup at Blairgowrie in 2019, couldn’t match his first round form, slipping to an 81 on an equally difficult day for scoring.
Congratulations to David Imrie (Lundin GC) who won the Vice-President’s Cup for the best scratch Super Senior with rounds of 77 and 73.

Super Seniors Summer Meeting - West Linton G C - 2/3rd June
GREENOCK ACE BATTLES THE ELEMENTS TO WIN AT WEST LINTON
In gale force winds and bursts of driving rain, Greenock’s Crawford Rae returned a magnificent second round score of 70 to clinch victory in the 36-hole Super Seniors Summer Meeting at West Linton.
The scratch player battled the elements to add to his first round score of 72 to win by four shots from Billy Erskine (Kilsyth Lennox) who had led after a first round of 71, also played in challenging conditions.
As well as finishing runner-up in the scratch section, thanks to a second round of 75, Billy triumphed as the handicap winner with nett rounds of 66 and 70, four shots ahead of Neil McGarva (Kilmacolm). John Fraser was third in the scratch section with rounds of 72 and 75.
Despite the 50 mph winds and heavy rain, most of the 65-strong field succeeded in completing both rounds on a course that was beautifully prepared and in excellent condition.
Our thanks go to all at West Linton Golf Club for hosting the tournament and for their kind attention and courtesy.

Thistle Windows North of Scotland Open - Fraserburgh G C- 12/13th June
GARY TOUGHS IT OUT TO TAKE GOLD AT WINDY FRASERBURGH
Gary Tough turned in a remarkable one-under par 69 to claim top honours at the Thistle Group North of Scotland Senior Strokeplay Championship at wind-battered Fraserburgh.
Battling gusts of up to 45 mph, the Edzell scratch player’s magnificent performance - the only sub-par round over the 36-hole tournament - was enough to secure the gold medal from Bathgate’s Graham Bell who finished on the same 145 total but lost out by dint of Tough’s better second round score. Bell had started the second day two shots ahead of his nearest challenger, Gullane’s Scott Walker, and the rest of the 100-strong field after an opening round of 73, played in very challenging conditions due to the strong winds and tricky greens.
Tough, who shot a six-over par 76 in the opening round, began his second round shakily, with bogeys at the first three holes. He steadied the ship with birdies at the fourth and sixth, but bogeyed the seventh and ninth to be out in 38 - three over the card.
But on the back nine Tough shifted up a gear, coming home in a stunning four-under par 31 with birdies at the 11th, 13th, 15th and 18th.
Meanwhile, Bell matched Tough’s outward 38. His inward half included birdies at the 11th and 15th - his only blemish being a bogey at the par three 14th for a score of 72, one better than his opening round.
Glenbervie’s George Barrie finished third, five shots behind with rounds of 79 and 71.
As a measure of just how well these three golfers played, they also finished first, second and third respectively in the handicap section.
Despite the challenging conditions, there was universal praise for the condition of the golf course as well as the excellent service and hospitality provided by the clubhouse staff.
The society is grateful to all at Fraserburgh Golf Club for hosting the event and their valuable contribution to another enjoyable and successful event,

Central Scotland Open - Renfrew G C - 30th June/July 1st
VICTORY RINGS FOR BELL AT RENFREW
Bathgate’s Graham Bell shot a second round one-under par 70 to clinch victory in the 36-hole Central Scotland Strokeplay Championship at Renfrew.
The +2 player bettered his first round score by two shots to take the honours by one stroke from Bill Macmillan (Bonnyton), his namesake Graham Bell (Crail) and first round leader John McKean (Prestwick) all of whom finished on one-over par totals.
McKean shot an unrivalled first round of 69 (two-under par) to lead by a stroke from Irvine’s George Robertson and Crail’s Graham Bell. But an unfortunate double bogey at the 17th saw him finish with a three-over par 74 and a one-over par aggregate.
Five other players in the 128-strong field finished a further stroke behind on 144.
Royal Troon’s John Rushbury (2) won the handicap section with nett rounds of 72 and 69, one stroke ahead of Kinross’s Scott Michie (2) who shot nett rounds of 72 and 70.
Congratulations to Dunkeld & Birnam’s Mark Williamson who shot a second round 69, the best gross score of the day.
The two-day tournament was played in fine weather and the course was in great condition, although players found the pin positions - particularly in the second round - extremely challenging.
The difficulty of the course undoubtedly contributed to rounds averaging almost four-and-a-half hours, although there were a number of complaints about unnecessarily slow play. The committee is fully aware of this and is considering what action might be required to generally speed up the pace of play.
The society is grateful to everybody at Renfrew Golf Club, including resident professional Andy McColl, the catering and bar staff for their kind attention and hospitality.

IMRIE TURNS UP THE HEAT TO TRIUMPH AT LOCHMABEN
Lundin’s David Imrie posted a five-over par total of 145 to win the Sandy Pirie Trophy in the sweltering heat of Lochmaben.
His rounds of 71 and 74 were enough to snatch victory by a single shot from Greenock’s Crawford Rae who followed his opening score of 72 with a 74.
Tom McLevy, Blairgowrie, finished third on 148 thanks to four birdies on the back nine in the second round.
It was a double whammy for Lundin members with Ian Dickson securing the handicap prize with nett rounds of 66 and 72, three shots ahead of Imrie.
Ian Angus, Duff House Royal, was third in the handicap section with nett rounds of 69 and 74.
The tournament was played in baking heat, particularly on the second day, which made overall scoring testing. But the course was in immaculate condition - including true, fast greens - and was beautifully presented.
The society is grateful to Head Greenkeeper Duncan Scobie and his team for their sterling work. We are also indebted to Lochmaben members John Smith, Austin Black, Maitland Pollock and Bryce Kelly for assisting as starters.
Our thanks also to Clubhouse Manager Rachael McCrudden and her staff for keeping competitors well fed and watered over the two-day event.
South of Scotland Open - Powfoot G C - 17/18th July
FOURTH SOUTH OF SCOTLAND CROWN FOR HENDERSON
Scotland internationalist Stewart Henderson claimed his fourth South of Scotland Strokeplay Championship with two magnificent sub-par rounds at Powfoot.
The Hamilton scratch player followed a five-under par 66 with a one-under-par 70 to take the title by three shots from Richard Moffat (Turnhouse) and Richard Johnston (Glenbervie).
Henderson’s impressive first round performance was punctuated with birdies at the first, second, fifth, eighth and ninth followed by nine straight pars on the back nine. His second round, played in more challenging conditions, was one of only three sub-par rounds on the day among the 111-strong field.
The reward for Henderson’s 136 aggregate was an unprecedented fourth South of Scotland victory, having previously won the title in 2016 (Southerness), 2018 (Dumfries & County) and 2022, again at Dumfries & County.
Reigning Order of Merit champion, Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon), finished fourth with rounds of 68 and 73.
A mark of Henderson’s quality performance was the fact that his gross scores were also good enough to finish top of the nett table.
Lindsay Taylor (Kirriemuir) was a shot behind on 137 with Philip Hendry (Stirling) third, two shots adrift.
The tournament was played mainly in warm sunshine although the early starters on Day Two had to contend with spells of heavy rain and strong winds. The course was beautifully presented.
The society is grateful to all at Powfoot Golf Club for hosting the event and for looking after competitors during two very enjoyable days of golf on a great course.
NO STOPPING CLARK IN ‘ONE STOP’ WEST OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
Former Scotland team captain Ronnie Clark added a second West of Scotland Strokeplay title to his haul of honours with victory at Cardross.
His 143 aggregate score - one over par - tied him with fellow internationalist Stewart Henderson over two days of stiff competition on a challenging course.
Clark, who previously won the title in 2017, secured the gold medal by dint of a better second round of 72. Henderson had jointly led with Bonnyton’s Willie MacMillan after their first round scores of 70, one better than Clark.
But the Hamilton stalwart, who won his fourth South of Scotland championship at Powfoot in July, couldn’t quite replicate his first round putting prowess which was all the more impressive given some very tricky pin positions.
Local player Brian Doherty and East Kilbride’s Kenny Gallacher both finished on 144, but Doherty won third scratch prize with a second round 70, two strokes better than Gallacher.
Doherty also won the handicap section on 142, one ahead of fellow scratch player John Laurie, Glasgow, and two ahead of Kinross’s Scott Michie (1),
A special shout-out to Laurie Chancellor, Inverness, who shot a remarkable three-under-par 68 in the second round - 15 shots better than his opening round - and the lowest gross score of the tournament.
The society is grateful to Robert Jenkins of the One Stop Group for sponsoring the tournament.
Our thanks also to all at Cardross Golf Club for hosting the championship, including the greenstaff for the excellent condition and presentation of the course, club professional Robert Farrell and the bar and catering staff for their first-class service and attention.

North-east were third, five shots adrift of the leading two teams.
Renfrewshire’s and Lothians’ five best scores, averaging 71.8 per player, reflected an extremely high standard of performance, thanks in no small part to unusually benign conditions and pristine condition of the course.

SJHST Autumn Meeting - Hamilton G C - 18/19th August
NO AUTUMN LEAVES FOR JENKINS IN TWO-DAY BIRDIE BONANZA
Royal Troon’s Robert Jenkins emerged victorious in the Autumn Meeting at Hamilton in a tournament that saw the lowest overall scoring of the season.
The Scottish internationalist followed a first round two-under par 69 with a brilliant five-under par 66 to clinch the gold medal by one stroke from local boy Stewart Henderson (70,66) and Erskine’s Ronnie Clark (66,70) who just fell short of securing his second SSGS tournament in succession.
Fellow internationalist Henderson, twice previous winner of the Autumn Meeting, took the runner-up spot from Clark by virtue of a better second round.
Jenkins’ second round was punctuated with five birdies and no dropped shots on the Par 71 course which was highly praised for its immaculate condition.
Overall, the top 10 players in the 122-strong field jointly shot 36 under par for the 36 holes with 17 sub par scores over the two-day event.
Three players recorded rounds of 66.
Bathgate’s Graham Bell and fellow club member David Thomson, both of whom have been selected to play for Scotland at the European Team Championships in Austria in September, alongside Henderson, Kenny Gallacher (East Kilbride), Mark Halliday (Royal Aberdeen) and Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon), finished joint fourth on 138, four under par.
Such was the quality of Jenkins’ performance over the two days, that the +1 player also finished top of the handicap section alongside Nick Robson (Royal Aberdeen) and Drew Waddell (Glasgow) on 137.
Special mention goes to Phil Hendry (Stirling) who had a second round hole-in-one at the 133-yard third hole - the first ace of his 51-year golfing career!
The society is grateful to all at Hamilton Golf Club for hosting a very successful event with particular thanks to club president Ross Cochran for assisting with starting duties. Super Seniors Masters - The Irvine Golf Club (Bogside) - 27th - 29th August
READY STEADY GO! MICHAEL BEATS THE FIELD AND THE RAIN TO CLAIM MASTER TITLE
Hertfordshire’s Michael Ready, making his debut in an SSGS tournament, was crowned 2025 Super Seniors Masters champion at rain-lashed Irvine Bogside.
The Melbourne Club at Brocket Hall player shot rounds of 74 and 77 to secure victory after the second of the three-round tournament had to be abandoned because of flooding.
Although Ready was nine over par for the two counting rounds, it was a remarkable performance given the extremely tough weather conditions due to frequent bouts of torrential rain.
His three over-par first round 74 was the best of the day, one ahead of Wishaw’s John Johnston and two better than Rob Ford (St Andrews), Ian Kerr (Lundin) and John Bennett (Shifnal).
Ready’s 36-hole aggregate was enough to win by two shots from fellow-Englishmen George Wilson (Calcot Park) and Andrew Stracey (Denham).
Best Scot was twice Super Seniors Master champion Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & County), a further shot behind, with rounds of 78 and 76.
Day Two had started overcast with a light drizzle. Seventeen players in the 117-strong field managed to complete their rounds - most notably John Fraser (Royal Burgess) with a 73, the lowest round of the tournament - but by mid-day the rain was biblical and greens began to flood.
After an hour’s suspension but with no let-up in the deluge, there was no alternative but to declare the course unplayable, despite the best efforts of the greenstaff.
Thankfully, the wet weather subsided enough to allow the third and deciding round to go ahead with Dave McColl (Durham City) recording the best score of the day on 74, followed by George Wilson, Charles Banks (Stanton-on-the-Wold) and Ian Jeen (New Club St Andrews) on 75.
But Ready’s 77 was enough to claim victory by a single shot.
In the handicap section, the winner was Robbie Messervy (Royal Jersey) on 142, one shot ahead of Lundin’s Ian White and two ahead of Colin Halcrow (Largs).
Irvine’s Vice-Captain Willie Cameron presented the trophies and medals.
The society is grateful to him, club manager Andy Arnot, professional James Smallwood and the members who acted as ball spotters which helped maintain the pace of play. We also greatly appreciate the valiant efforts of the greenstaff who did their best to beat the weather and who provided a beautifully presented course.
Our sincere thanks, too, to Archie Wohlgemuth and Dave Terrey who came out of retirement to carry out administrative and starting duties.
Super Seniors Autumn Meeting - Ratho Park G C - 9/10th September
DINGER RINGS UP HIS FIRST VICTORY AS A SUPER SENIOR
Former Scotland internationalist Graham ‘Dinger’ Bell won his first tournament as a Super Senior, clinching victory in the Autumn Meeting at Ratho Park.
The Downfield veteran followed a first round 71 with a level par 69 to take the honours by two shots from Roy Dow, Alloa (71, 71) and Laurie Chancellor, Inverness (69,73).
Chancellor led the 75-strong field after the opening round, with John Fraser, Royal Burgess, a shot behind on 70.
Bell’s level-par second round comprised two bogeys and two birdies.
In the handicap section, Kilmacolm’s Neil McGarva (9) led with a first round 67, one shot ahead of Cardross twins Jim and Peter Kinloch, Colin Halcrow, Largs, and Roy Dow.
Peter Kinloch triumphed with a second round net score of 67, one shot ahead of Dow with Ian Angus, Duff House Royal, third on 140.
The Society is grateful to Ross Cochran, Hamilton, for acting as starter and to all at Ratho Park Golf Club for hosting the event.

CLARK GOES ON A BIRDIE FEST TO TO WIN THE EAST OF SCOTLAND AT LEVEN
Scotland internationalist Ronnie Clark clocked up 11 birdies over two days to secure victory in the 36-hole East of Scotland Seniors Strokeplay Championship at Leven Links.
He followed his three-under par first round 68 with a one-under par 70 to win by two shots from Glenbervie’s Richard Johnston (69,71) and first round leader David Thomson (67, 73).
In the unusually windless first round, eight players scored par or better, reflecting a very high standard of play among the 118-strong field.
Two net scores of 68 spelled success for Oliver McCrone, Turnhouse, in the handicap section.
Jim Imrie, Ladybank, playing off 7, shot a gross level-par 71 to lead the handicap section after round one, but could only manage a net 75 in the second round to finish runner-up on 139 with Murray Ferguson, Royal Burgess, finishing third, a shot behind.
One of the highlights of the second round was a hole-in-one by Laurie Chancellor, Inverness, on the 189-yard 15th. Congratulations to Laurie.

GALLACHER CROWNED SCOTTISH SENIORS MATCHPLAY CHAMPION - AND TOPS THE ORDER OR MERIT
Scotland internationalist Kenny Gallacher made it a double celebration when he won the Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship at Strathmore, guaranteeing him top slot in the national Order of Merit table.
The East Kilbride stalwart defeated three-times champion John Mathers in a final in which both players had to battle heavy rain and wind as well as each other.
The match came to an end at the 15th hole, securing a 4&3 victory for Gallacher after he had chipped in at the long, difficult 14th for a birdie three. The result denied Mathers a fourth successive matchplay title, but he was magnanimous in defeat.
‘I am disappointed to have fallen at the final hurdle, but in Kenny I lost to the best player of this year,’ he said.
Gallacher, who was first capped for Scotland in 2018, said: ‘Last year after my performance at the British Seniors I was so fed up with my game I seriously thought about chucking competitive golf. I stopped practising and just started playing for fun. And then things started to turn around. I was enjoying my golf again and thankfully the results followed.
‘John is a great champion, having won this trophy for the last three years. This win, and being back in the Scottish team, tops off a very satisfying season for me.’
In the semi-finals, Mathers took on new Scotland cap Graham Bell who, in the quarter-finals, beat reigning Order of Merit champion Paul Moultrie. Mathers, aiming for his fourth successive matchplay championship, came through 2&1.
The second semi-final went all the way to the fourth extra hole before Gallacher and two-times matchplay champion Stewart Henderson could be separated, with Gallacher holing a bunker shot to progress to the final.
In the other quarter-finals, Henderson beat Stirling’s Phil Hendry while Scotland team player David Thomson and Gallacher had to go to the 19th before the latter clinched the tie with a birdie.
Last year’s Super Seniors handicap champion Lindsay Gordon contested the scratch final against Inverness’s Laurie Chancellor. Again, the match had to go to extra time before Gordon claimed the title at the 19th for a spectacular double.
The Super Seniors handicap final was between Kilmacolm’s Neil McGarva (9) and Ian Jeen (3), New Club St Andrews, with McGarva emerging victorious with a 3&1 win.
The finalists, as well as the Super Seniors contending for third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth places, had to battle heavy rain and gusting winds as Storm Amy made her presence felt.
The championship trophies were presented by Society Chairman Alan Michie who thanked competitors and all at Strathmore Golf Centre for hosting the championship for the second consecutive year.
Accepting the Super Seniors scratch trophy, Lindsay Gordon paid special thanks to competitions secretary Ian Kerr for all his hard work during the championship as well as throughout the year.
Gallacher’s victory means he tops this year’s Order of Merit table for players aged 50 to 64. Laurie Chancellor is crowned Super Seniors’ Order of Merit champion. Congratulations to both for magnificent performances throughout the season.
The Society is grateful to all at Strathmore Golf Centre for hosting the championships and for their excellent hospitality. Special thanks, also, to the greenstaff for presenting the course in top-class condition despite some challenging weather conditions.
