Bar food and service poor 2 meals received cold returned 1.
Bar service was the "you will be served at our convenience" approach.
Cost of drink disgraceful poor quality vodka 4 euro and small bottle coke 2 A bottle of vodka in Supermarket can be bought for 9 euro.
With the camaraderie in the society this event could be held anywhere even in the UK and it would still be a success.
1 Bus transfer from Murcia airport was rather expensive.
2 Quality of resort is very good BUT it is a ghost town and I found it almost depressingly quiet with no facilities such as restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. within walking distance. I think it is essential to have something of interest to walk out to in an evening and at Hacienda there was nothing except the golf club. Living accommodation in a “resort town” would be much better.
I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the course.I know they were beginning to” trick” the course up somewhat for the forthcoming Euro tour qualifier, however I think if we could have moved a few of the tees forward at some holes It would have been even more enjoyable. That aside the organization and the format of the tournament was excellent. Practice facilities were superb.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the organization of tournament
Even if the Port Mazarron option is financially/après golf attractive, the pre/post golf travel time will probably mean 1hr each way, making it approx. 8hr round trip. This may well disqualify it as an option.
GREAT VALUE, GREAT HOSPITALITY,GREAT PRICE!
I can understand some people’s concerns over lack of facilities and lack of entertainment but I believe as an overall package, that, this deal would b very hard to improve without a large increase in cost
A sign post at the end of the road would be handy
More options for the afternoons – not sure what … visit La Manga, walking in the hills, vineyard visits, pig farm visits
Pull in some Spanish guys to play … international match on the Sunday – would Spanish federation be interested? Scotland V the Rest of the World if we could get some from various countries.
Dart board in the clubhouse – maybe organize a “superstars team” event over the week – some sort of league – darts, golf (teams of 6? over doubles and singles), pool table ????
The Alamo is an excellent centre for the event but maybe we have seen enough of it in the 2 years we have been. I am sure if you asked the members to suggest alternative venues that they feel could almost replicate what we enjoyed this year and last they could come up with a few ideas. .
They would know what facilities were required and once you have a list of possible venues they could be written to, informed that it is a tender process, and asked to submit their bids. Even if it doesn’t give us a new venue for 2010 it gives a head start on 2011
Would suggest that all costs excluding travel be paid to SSGS at least 1 month prior to the event. This would avoid handling huge sums of cash at the Hacienda del Alamo.
We are not in favour of staying at Port Mazarron and travelling back and forward each day.If a car is hired there is no necessity to stay outwith the complex. It may be cheaper for 4 to share a car rather than travel by bus.Perhaps Billy could do a deal with a Car Hire Company for us.
This was my first trip to Hacienda and I would have to say I was quite disappointed with the whole complex in terms of its’ isolation and lack of social facilities.
To be staying in self-catering accommodation and not be able to even buy a pint of milk, unless you were able to beg a lift from someone going to the local (2 miles away!) supermarket, was quite distressing. I also found that, with the relatively early tea times, there was great difficulty in filling in the rest of the day. The golf course was most acceptable, as was the whole competition, although I don’t know if I would wish to play 6 rounds again.
Also, a lack of atmosphere after the golf was a bit disappointing. But I greatly appreciated the work and effort put in by everyone and in reflection I thoroughly enjoyed my week. Meeting old faces was great. Would I come back? I don’t think so but Port of Mazarron sounds more appealing and I would certainly consider. Would golf in Turkey be worth considering? Keith, many thanks for all your efforts – very much appreciated.
This years’ accommodation seemed expensive for what it was – unlike the golf, which was excellent value. However I think that on site accommodation is probably better than being bussed in given different tee off times etc.
More, earlier evening off site eating options would help a great deal. Marrazon is very conservatively estimated at 25 minutes drive – given that Cartagena was nearly 45minutes away. But Marrazon would be good for the evenings – if enough people wanted to eat there.
The bus that transferred us was a 42 seater and there was about 10 of us. This must have effected the cost. We also assumed that we would have drivers as per last year and also that that hotel and other complex facilities be completed. Had we known all of the above we would have hired a car and perhaps arranged accommodation elsewhere.
I would probably go along with the 20 euro a night thing and travel in although I think we should go out to tender as I am sure other resorts would be keen to accommodate us.
We thoroughly enjoyed the course and would probably do the same format again, staying at the resort and hiring a car as we would be happy to return.
Rosemary enjoyed the ladies golf. The idea of travelling back and forth from Mazarrin does not appeal.
Car is must to get about
We arranged our own accommodation in the Spanish Village - but it was like a ghost town and for that reason (if returning) would probably go elsewhere for things to do between golf.
The resort you suggest sounds like a good alternative - as does the price. Thought that cost of drinks in clubhouse was expensive compared to restaurants/bars elsewhere. I used a pull trolley all week but found that the round was very "anti-social" when playing partners used buggies - it was like playing on your own - not something I liked when being on holiday.
Also found that five days of competitive golf a bit too intense although don't know if others feel the same way. Maybe have a day off or limit the singles to 36 hole comp - or start doubles comp on Monday with break on Wednesday!
Ideally, I'd prefer to play the week's golf in either late March/early April, as normally I'm just back from annual summer hols around October time. Another factor which may influence decision to go again would be £/Euro exchange rate. When deciding to commit to 2009 event, exchange rate was 1.17 and rising!
We may need to fine tune the available activities. Some members were content to “chill” for the week and others were looking for activity between rounds.
Euro rate impacted heavily on clubhouse costs and for the first time we were conscious of beer and wine prices.
I and my company will continue to support the Hacienda venue if it were to stay there next year and believe we could increase our numbers of golfers with partners .
I think the golf package is great value, we hire a car and found plenty to do and nice eating places with in 30 and 45 minutes drive. That was when we were fit to drive I E that was when we had not been in your company
Keith – there is nothing wrong with the deal or the course it is just the boredom and lack of options if you are in a group who have not got transport, had the hotel and Spanish village been open then all would have been good.
We enjoyed the trip on the whole and it was a nice experience. It was very well organised. In particular, Lee Harrington did a fantastic job and made us feel very welcome.
The villa we had was well-equipped and perfectly adequate for our needs. It was also good that Muriel Millar organised various activities for the ladies during the week.
Re: changes / improvements, early November would be better if the weather we had was normal for mid-October. We would have liked a few more amenities in the clubhouse; for example, it would have been handy to be able to buy bananas before rounds of golf.
Re: plans for next year, we would prefer to be on site rather than stay 25 minutes’ drive away from the golf course. Perhaps some transport could be organised for trips to nearby towns / supermarkets on a regular basis.
Firstly I think that despite the issues associated with H Del A that as
a society we should honour the arrangement with Billy Sim that we go
there for at least 3 years. He does a very good job. I believe that the
problems with H Del A are that it is in a remote location and that the
expanse of the resort is an issue. For us as a society visiting the
resort I think that we can help to alleviate these issues by being well
prepared before we get there. I shall give you two examples what I mean
by this.
It was wrongly assumed that Margaret and me were travelling in Bill Crightons car from
the airport. Bill and Dorothy were flying from Prestwick to Murcia and
Margaret and me from Edinburgh to Alicante. Following on from that when
John Green met us at reception on arrival he said that since he thought
we had a car he put us in an outlying villa. People without cars he put
within walking distance. No big deal as we arranged with Bill and
Dorothy on timing to get to and from the clubhouse, however highlights
how we can be better prepared prior to arrival. Need to sort out the
internal transportation within the resort. We don't all need cars but
if you are out in the extremities of the resort you do. John Green was
not a happy chap as regards to information flow.
Secondly after last year myself along with others had requested that we
go outside of the resort for dinner again. Last year a party of us had
gone to The Yacht Club in Cartegena one evening which had been
organised by Billy Sim. It was a good night and I had requested that we
go out at least twice during the week. This would have helped to
alleviate the feeling of remoteness within the resort. Unfortunately
nothing had been done. On request Billy hastily organised a night out
on the Thursday night this year which whilst OK should have been
better. His reference to the steaks at the prize giving.
Maybe not everyone received the weeks itinerary
before departure.
Most enjoyable again but getting very expensive (the best part of £1000) mostly caused by expensive accommodation and having to pay for carts each day.
Most courses in Spain are throwing in free carts with golf each day to encourage visitors who are in short supply. For me twice to the Alamo is enough.
Friends who go to Spain each year say they are almost being able to suggest the price they pay after negotiation, having refused the original price given.(a group of only 12).
May I suggest either El Paraiso or Atalaya Park as possible venues as these courses have a large hotel on site and near restaurants etc in town (Estapona) They are also not too long (which I heard from some as a complaint at Alamo) and very playable.
There are at least three of us from Monifieth who are unlikely to return to Alamo. I am sure 'Hutch' has knowledge of alternative courses which he knows. His advice is usually valuable.
These comments in no way detract from the excellent work done by yourselves over the last years. I just feel its time to change in order to keep this fixture viable.
Was a little disappointed in the lack of activities after golf. Not enough to do close at hand. Fantastic venue for playing golf.
